With these sculptures, I had to develop a single sculpture that balances two contrasting structures or systems or patterns to form a dialectic, i.e., a logical argument. I built a sculpture composed of conflicting or dissonant sculptural patterns. One system is to be made of wood or wood by-products. I was able to use a second system using wood or any other material, method or object. One of the materials i used was wood and the other was stuffed nylon. The purpose of this piece is to produce a coherent form by integrating dissonant structural patterns and to expand notions of abstract meaning by combining disparate elements to form a whole. The piece is titled "Held Together", because the piece is held only together by the tension of the nylon. To add moments throughout the piece, i added color blocking of copper paint.
Materials: Walnut, Stuffed Nylon, copper, copper paint, twine

This sculpture was developed under the idea of a puzzle. By taking a 6 foot piece of poplar wood, and cutting it into four pieces, I was able to construct a piece that is balanced by wood placement and joints.
Materials: Poplar planks
