I have three books to choose when get this project, and i have chosen “to kill a mocking bird” at the first time, as it is the book which i always want to read while dare not to read. My English was quite poor when i just arrived London, i could not understand and have no courage to speak, then my roommate, a boy from Hawaii, took me to buy this book and told me that he only spent one week to finish reading this book when he studied English in his childhood. While i have found many words which i didn’t know in the first page when i opened this book for the first time, and i could not enjoy this book at all. This time when i opened this book again and watched its movie, i have truly understood the story told by it, it is much deeper than i have imaged, and it is also a very good book which also makes me know how to start designing its cover, i have seen many covers of penguin book as well, they all do not have an uniform feature, while the covers of “to kill a mocking bird” mostly have used the element of robin. I want to use robin too, but that is a special robin. 

I have made some drafts for the first attempt, and designed the shape of bird into relatively geometrical shape under the enlightenment of Aaron Nieh, it has a feeling of water caltrop, as i think this story is heart-hurting, and need to make the buyers think that this is a quite serious book that causes people to think deeply. 

I know the book design of this time is not successful, while it is also the first time for me to design book, and there has many insufficient places. I am also wilful on the design of robin, and many classmates have told me that the appearance of this robin is like a chicken, i just felt that was funny at that time, but i was not willing to change it, then my classmates suggested me to make this fat robin to be thinner for letting it close to the shape of robin, hence i did modify it a little bit without damaging its original appearance that i want it to be. Also i do not think i have a very good understanding on this book, but i do have my own thoughts and feelings, to present my thoughts on the cover of the book and thus attracting the attention and curiousness of consumers is quite an enjoyable process, and it’s very interesting. I believe that i would have more experience and could grasp more easily for the next book design. And at the same time, i am thinking about that the cover of book is really that important for attracting consumers? For the book cover, it is better to present the contents of book, or the creative and beautiful appearance with new conception is more important? Or maybe it could have both. I am quite regretful for starting the design without making enough research, as i was really unable to hold myself back, bur for me, the beautiful and comfortable appearance is really very important, as people all are easily attracted by beautiful things, and in this way, i am just a relatively superficial person, just like most of the “robins”.
