This writing desk is primarily made from American Cherry. The design inspiration was influenced by James Krenov, from the curve of the legs to the design aesthetic of the handles. When it came to the panels I wanted to lighten the design a bit, so I mimicked the curve in the legs on the sides of the panels. Since cherry darkens to a deep warm amber color overtime I used spalted maple for the panels to lighten the color of the overall piece.
For the top I wanted a thick feel but for it not to look beefy, so I took a page from the shakers and beveled the underside edge of the top.
The dowels used to make handles are turned on the lathe from the same spalted maple as the side panels. They are turned with a slight swell in the middle to add a subtle visual interest as well as give a bit more meat for your fingers to grab onto. The dowels are then set into walnut posts which are hand shaped easing over the edges creating a pillowed affect.
