In the Spring semester of 2017 I was asked to create a student magazine for Lindenwood university, as they were moving away from their weekly newspaper. Over the summer I did extensive research on magazine design and returned to campus for the fall semester with a magazine template made from scratch. Over the following semester I wrote a style guide to accompany the publication. Below are samples of my layout designs for the very first issue of the Legacy Student Magazine, the whole magazine can be read here.
The cover was a poster I designed wrapped around the publication.
This design was also reused on page 10.
Being the very first issue of the student publication we didn't have any outside advertisement to run. So I made some last minuet house ads to run on the inside of the font and back covers.
This page still runs in every issue only updates the date for each issue release.
The following pages ran for the print of the first issue and were my layouts.
The design for the intro section of the magazine hasn't changed much from issue to issue.
Each issue of our publication has a "Big Story" section which is an investigative report.
The style for these pop out quotes have since changed since this issue and are now more pleasing. Learning from this process that shorter quotes stand out more to the reader.
The female figure on the bottom left was one of the original designs for the cover before I switched it over to a red scribble.
Even though this photo is ignoring the layout rules, since Kevin is looking away from the spine, I couldn't pass up using Ms. Higginbotham's moving photograph, with how well it captured the mood of the reporters opinion.
In this layout it should have said photography and illustrations by Kat Owens, since I didn't draw the loaf of bread on the bottom left. Its actually a pice of play food form a children's cooking set.
This was the first photograph I ever cutout using photoshop. At the time I didn't now how to use the pen tool so this was done using a mask and painting out the background using my Wacom bamboo tablet.
