(2014) AP Art Submission

Submitted for AP 2D-Art back in 2014.
I used pinwheels as a key subject matter, and animals of flight, such as butterflies and birds, as a recurring motif. The animals are used playfully to enhance the idea of fun and freedom. For example, in [7], pelicans are zipping all about the pinwheels and one of them tries to eat more fishes than it can, and in [5], bees are swirling together with the spinning pinwheel.

My exploration took me through design applications that allowed me to depict a sense of movement by arranging my subject matters in a circular and receding manner [5,7], and experimented with various ways of representations, the literal and the non-literal. By superimposing the subject matters in my works [1,10], I also attempted to create a more interesting and layered composition.
The color blue imitates the sky and evokes feelings of open space while warm colors evoke joy, which is an attempt to portray a child frolicking in an open field. In [11] and [12], psychedelic colors were used as an effort to deviate from the blue and orange in my previous works, and indicates a whimsical quality and the boundless energy of a child.
