The prompt for this project was to create a hat for ourself that represents something about a culture we belong to. My hat and its box are both visual representations of the outgoing introvert culture. Even though I prefer to see but be unseen, I also don’t mind being in “the spotlight.” The bright, loud colors are not only a representation of my style, but they represent the open, outgoing side of my culture. The weaving represents both sides – the in and out of being outgoing and introverted, simultaneously. The beads and tassels act as a shield, or a curtain, against the viewer – this is the introverted side of my culture. Because my personality/culture is not completely introverted, gaps have been incorporated – an invitation for a possible connection.
The hat was produced with an embroidery hoop, finger-knit yarn, and plastic beads. The box is woven from three layers of paper.
