Collective Memory 2013 Competitive Scholarship

collective memory.

Every piece of information consumed is outwardly visible–

if only in pieces.

Fragmented recollection builds reality.
People send me postcards. They write about their travels, giving me glimpses into their experiences. They write about places I’ve never been. They write memories I’ll never have. They choose specific things to share with me. And, in sending me these postcards they send me memories they think I will want.
I save them. I collect them. I display them. I enjoy them. But in sending me these cards, I then must receive them. I absorb them––and their memories become mine. I have reinterpreted these postcards. They are now my memories, but the spirit of the sender still lingers, embedded in the imagery.
I make a copy of the original postcards, print them digitally to scale. I then cut into the cards, breaking them and combining multiple cards into a single collage. I use this collage as the basis for my work. I transfer the collage to my canvas and further alter the image as I paint, until I feel I have successfully made these memories my own.
