Matariki is a time of reflection and being together with loved ones. Every year Te Papa holds a winter celebration where a bonfire is lit and people are welcomed to engage in pūrakau, karakia, kōrero and kai.
Artist Michel Tuffery’s artistic expression of the letter ‘M’ represented the first letter in both ‘Matariki’ and ‘Māori’ new year. When incorporating his artwork into the brochure, cool hues of blue, green and purple were used in contrast to the colour orange; a reference to the tradition of Ahi Kaa, keeping the home fires burning.
