University Work - Games Design Document - RISE

This project was my Year 2 Games Design Document, and I was given the task of designing a game concept using only title given by our tutor. The title of the game had to be called “RISE” but the content and game play were limitless. Along with our game idea, we also had to provide in-depth research to justify any and all decisions made.

I started this Project in summer of 2012 just as something to practice while I was away from University. Of course when I started this in summer it had no working title and it was more of a hobby than an actual job. So when I came back to university in the summer and found out my assignment give me a working title and free rein to do anything I just simply used my summer work and tweaked it slightly to fit into my document.

RISE plays out as an open world RPG, in which the player takes control of their own vessel and can sail the oceans completing quests and becoming an adventure of the high seas.

The player is able to have open sea combat with other ships controlled by NPC’s or by other players online, as well as fighting colossal sized sea creatures. Even though players have the option to pirate and attack ships they also have the option to be peaceful, by fishing or escorting NPC’s. Even though the game is an open world RPG it leans more towards the sand box genre allowing players to do whatever they want in their own worlds, this way the game gives the player an individual experience.
