Since an early age Maria has worked long hours as a waiter, chamber maid, and in miscellaneous agricultural jobs, first in her native Dalmatia, and then in Austria, Germany and England, as an undocumented worker. At 72, with a pension hardly worth mentioning, her only sources of income are a small garden and vineyard. Although she can barely make her ends meet, she sells only half of her produce and excellent vine, and distributes the rest to friends and family. Maria never complains, and speaks about her life without a trace of regret or bitterness. She is one of the most courageous, generous and hardworking people that I have ever met.
