ISTD: Colouring-in History

Colouring-In History is a colouring-in book that explores the etymology of the word ‘colour.’ It also comments on how ‘colour’ has been used in a different, negative context – in racism. ‘Colour’ is used in racism because it is seen as a divider – people are segregated because of the different colours of their skins. The book encourages its readers to restore the original meaning of ‘colour’ and to reject racism.

Colouring-In History has been designed completely in black and white – except for the colour swatch pages. The colour swatch pages draw a direct comparison between ‘colour’ and ‘skin colours.’ They suggest that different skin colours are all just as beautiful as ordinary colours are and that they should be celebrated in the same way. This led me to the slogan that defines the colouring-in book – “celebrate; don’t discriminate.”
