The Memory Bank

The Memory Bank
The memory bank is showcasing how technology affects how we document memories. The 21st century leads us to the era of unlimited storage. The freedom of taking as many photos as we want changes our behavior of capturing moments and looking at the pictures—we don’t flip through the photo album anymore because there are millions of them. Turns out, technology is helping us capture the memories, but we end up losing access to those memories, like a piggy bank with just the coin slot. While we are losing control over what to remember, technology gains the ability to superficially remind us what happened two weeks ago.

CRITICAL DESIGN + INTERACTIVE DESIGN

The whole project evolves from my personal fear of forgetting. I started to realize it more 5 years ago, when I started moving around and living in different places. Because I couldn’t pack everything, I would take pictures of the objects that I can’t bring, so I have a digital/flat version of the object stored somewhere.

The piece invites viewers to put a memory coin into the slot. It seems like the easiest interaction, as it reflects how handy technologies have became. We continue using what is given without questioning it.
