This was a animated trailer made during a live client brief for Bloomsbury Publishing, representing the upcoming young adult novel ‘Social Creature’. I used frame by frame animation for every animated scene, broken up by small pieces of text that introduces an audience to the novel. I intentionally left all narrative aspects vague, with the goal of inciding curiosity of all viewers.
While this was a young adult novel set in upper-class New York society, it held a darker tone that I wanted to convey in my trailer. I used smoke to represent the two main characters and montages of imagery and actions rather than using character animations – I wanted to create an air of mystery around these personas so that readers would have a chance to imagine them for themselves.
