A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME, STUDENT DESIGN AWARDS 2018
The following is my entry to this year's edition of Penguin's Student Design Awards competition. I participated in the Adult Non-Fiction category, re-designing the book cover for Stephen Hawking's bestselling book "A Brief History of Time".
I was inspired by the concept of the expanding universe and of the relativity of time. Through mark making, I designed a pattern which reflected the passage of time - using the continuous repetition of a single element; I then "stretched" this pattern in order to depict a feeling of expansion. The resulting image is also reminiscent of "wrinkles" in the spacetime fabric, which have been speculated to be a result of the gravitational pull of black holes. I chose to use black and white to symbolise darkness and light, the Big Bang and black holes.
