Going/Staying

“He listens—and first to his body; he learns rhythm from it, in order consequently to appreciate external rhythms. His body serves him as a metronome.”
—Henri Lefebvre, Rhythmanalysis

Going/Staying investigates the unconscious everyday rhythm of walking by wirelessly connecting the artist's footsteps to a kick drum.  It uses data recorded from pressure sensors placed in the artist’s shoes while taking a walk through the Walters Art Museum. The kick drum, while installed in the museum, then "plays" this recorded data, beating every time the artist took a footstep during the walk.

Artist's footsteps, Arduino Fios, datalogger shield, kickdrum, door lock actuator, Velostat step sensors, various electrical components; Duration: 30 min.
