Empty Midnight Cover Art

Empty Midnight is a single by neo-soul/synth pop artist, Jigo Viriña. It is a song about the struggle of working late nights to provide for the people you love.

(Jigo has been trying to use his music to help fund his dad's stroke rehabilitation.
He dedicates this song to him.)

My favorite line from the is, "Nothing worth doing comes easy." Even though the song is about struggle, it is also about realizing that things will eventually be okay. It is the main inspiration for the cover art.

I thought it would be interesting to use paper as a medium. I used ripped layers of dark paper to form smaller and smaller openings that reveal a glowing center. It's like the light at the end of a tunnel :)

Here's an early sketch I presented to Jigo

-

The layers were made from pieces of torn cartolina stuck to illustration board. Each layer was separated by foam board to give the work varying levels of depth.

-

I wanted the typography to match the roughness of the torn edges so I used an exacto knife to cut and rip the letters out.

The finished cover art :)
