I built this pedestal with a secret compartment that is revealed when the top is lifted. The compartment is meant to hold art pieces. I wanted to create a pedestal that does the opposite of what a pedestal is typically supposed to do. Instead of displaying art, this pedestal conceals it.
I like to present this piece in a room filled with similar wooden white pedestals. Thus, when viewers hear the title of the piece "Invisible Art," they tend to assume that I haven't created anything, and am just presenting them with an empty pedestal. This often leads to some confusion, until I explain that the pedestal itself is the piece. The impression that I haven't crafted anything spurs some to express their frustration with contemporary art in general, which sometimes generates discussion about what art essentially is.
