MANDARIN GARDENS APARTMENT

Size: 150 sqm

Status: Completed 2012

The site is an old condominium which the owners, a couple with one child, wanted to revamp. Since this apartment is large, we explored the possibility of creating transitions spaces between the living and bedroom spaces instead of having it simply separated by a simple door. We introduced an intermediate space between the living (outside) and the bedroom (inside) spaces, and called it the “Grey space”. These Grey spaces serve as both separate and also connect the inside and outside spaces.

One enters the master bedroom through the study room. With the use of dual 'slide and hide' doors, this study room can become either the extension of the living room, or the extension of the master bedroom. Similarly for the kid’s bedroom, the Grey space is the Kid’s play area. This space opens ups to the living room, so the parents can supervise the child easily. Another sliding door is provided so that the space can be closed up to hide the mess, or to provide privacy for the kid’s bedroom. The sliding doors can also be opened all at once to create a fluid and spacious home, allowing light and air to permeate throughout the apartment.

The different spaces were also differentiated through the use of materials. The private bedrooms walls, floors and ceilings are finished in timber, and the living spaces are finished with screed flooring. The timber ceiling of the bedrooms extends into the Grey spaces, while the screed flooring of the living spaces extend into the Grey spaces. This creates continuity between these spaces by giving the Grey space identities of both the inside and outside rooms.
