Choice Project: Value & Shape

Description: For this project I chose to draw a lotus flower because it’s my favorite flower to sketch. I also wanted to show a lot of detail. I wanted the viewers to be attracted to the amount of shading and detail used. I wasn’t able to finish my drawing, but the petals of the flower would have been carried over to the border. The reason why I wanted the petals to go all the way to the border is because I wanted to create movement, that way it would catch the viewers eyes.
Analysis: The purpose of this project was to create value and shape. To create value I shaded in parts of the petals. This added depth to the drawing. For shape I made the petals look more triangular at the tip than the petals in the reference I used. Another principle of design I used was contrast by making some parts of the flower darker than the other parts.
Interpretation: For this project I wanted to focus on value. I thought that if I went into detail with my drawing it would catch the viewers attention. So I used movement, contrast, and rhythm in my drawing.
Judgement:  For the most part I think I was successful with creating value and shape. But if I would have been able to finish it would have appealed to the viewers eye more. I need to work on making sure my projects get finished. I like the idea I was going for but disappointed that I didn’t finish.
