Arrowmont Scholarship Application

"Doll Art I"
2011
25'' x 37''
Cotton fabric, Mx dyes, bleach, thickened Mx dyes, thread.

Attending Arrowmont would be an amazing opportunity to intensely focus on my craft with a small group of dedicated and inspiring people in a beautiful location void of distractions. I believe Arrowmont could enhance my work by providing a place to further explore more specific dye techniques and input from other professors. I wish to learn more about dyeing and printing processes to create new images, textures and colors that will allow me to express myself on fabric. Each following image contains a caption describing ideas and materials explored in each piece and how taking classes at Arrowmont would be beneficial to my workin terms of each specific process.
"Doll Art II"
2011
25'' x 37''
Cotton fabric, Mx dyes, bleach, thickened Mx dyes, thread.

In this piece I utilized several different dye processes, additive, reductive, resist, and direct application to create a unique image, environment and feeling into the work, I would like to take the time to learn what they have to offer at Arrowmont in order to create a more mature skill base and palate for new work.
"Lullaby"
2012
20''x 20''x 98''
crocheted white yarn, polymer clay, acrylic paint, poly-fill, found object.

This work was created using inspiration from a found chair and white lace object on the characters head. My work would be greatly influenced by classes having to do with weaving non-fabric materials and the action of using found objects to create new ones, along with the memory and history of found objects and what that means when combined with new materials and ideas.
"La Familia"
2011
22'' x10''x 6''
hand marbled china silk, sculpey, acrylic paint

Arrowmont offers a class dedicated to marbling. This piece was created using hand marbled silk; it was my first and last attempt at the process, but I am very interested in exploring marbling further using different materials and subject matter. I would be extremely excited to have the opportunity to do this at Arrowmont.
"Konception"
2012
36" x 36"' x 24"
Rayon, Mx dyes, polymer clay, acrylic paint, gold fabric

The abstract forms in the piece were created to portray texture and feeling to compliment/contrast the clay structures, I believe the idea of juxtaposition between the two materials (hard/soft) could be pushed formally and texturally with techniques that I could learn in the felting and 3d stitching courses at Arrowmont.
"Kat"
2012
32''x 19''x 20''
Rayon fabric, Mx dyes, polymer clay, acrylic paint, gold fabric, false eyelashes

Staring with this piece I have begun to create a body of work that really focuses on individuality and personality of the object. I am interested in learning more ways of pushing this idea of giving a piece of fabric a real meaning and bringing people to a place they would never experience through use of color shapes and design processes, layering and resisting fabric using repetitive actions as described in the memory on cloth course at Arrowmont.
"Koral"
2012
30''x 30''x 19''
Rayon fabric, Mx dyes, polymer clay, acrylic paint, silver fabric, false eyelashes

Here I am thinking about growth and possibilities, starting to introduce new materials to the characters in order to make a statement about who these creatures are, and where they come from. I have thought about what it would mean to start adding texture by use of quilting, felting, stitching etc. Want to figure out what other techniques in fabric manipulation can be combined with these objects to bring them to another level past that of just dye work.
"Kookie"
2012
36''x 24''x 21''
Rayon fabric, Mx dyes, polymer clay, acrylic paint, silver fabric, false eyelashes

Again, thinking about growth, transition, change. The body was created with two simple dye baths, i enjoy the simplicity of this creature as opposed to other ones, yet think I could push that by attaining a more mature skill base in resist dyeing at Arrowmont.
"Kandy"
2013
38"x 40"x 28"
Rayon fabric, Mx dyes, polymer clay, acrylic paint, gold fabric, white cone yarn, false eyelashes

This is the most recent piece of this series. Interested in bringing the knitting process into this project, how it begins to cross the boundaries between art and craft, Arrowmont could provide me with knowledge of tradition and skills of innovation with knitting processes and materials to intertwine knitting more into the object in unexpected ways in order to discover new ways of pushing this idea about craft art and objectivity.
