Typographer + Font Book: Avenir

This project was created for my Typography 1 class. The goal is to design and construct an accordion style book that will showcase a font as well as the typographer who created it. I was given Adrian Frutiger and his sans-serif typeface Avenir. I wanted to do something that will appeal to the idea of "future," which is the direct English translation of the French word avenir. My design process mainly focused on clean lines, geometric shapes, negative space, and bold elements. It's my own modern interpretation of the typeface into an inspired layout design. I also wrote the contents of the book. Included inside is a brief overview of the history of the font and also some background information about the typographer.

After many sleepless nights and a ton of revisions, this was the outcome of my work! I thoroughly enjoyed making this book. It was a lot of hard work, but I learned so much throughout the process.

Avenir is a fun font to work with. It's very geometric in nature, thus it suited well with the aesthetics that I was going for with this project. Also, integrating images of Adrian Frutiger himself added even more depth to my work. Color-wise, I ended up going with red. I wanted my book to look strong and noticeable to the eyes, just like the typeface. I decided to print my book on 60 pound weight paper as I wanted to get that substantial feel after everything is put together. I also layered each spread with some heavy weight red Canson paper to add more stability and heft to the book.
