The Shape of an Eating Disorder

Description

This corset is about the pressure from society to conform to the "perfect" body in the eyes of America. The front and back panels are the description of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa from the DSM, because these are diagnosable conditions, not style trends. The side panels are a mixture of measuring tape and diet/weight loss pills. The entire piece is adorned with Ex-Lax and weight loss pills in jewelry casings, as well as mirrors and chains. The ribbon is Disney princesses, showing how these expectations are encouraged and cultivated from childhood. The fabric lining is God Bless America fabric, showing how these regulations not only exist but are supported in America.
