Brighton Photo Biennial

Last week we visited Brighton as a group and went to some of the exhibitions that were going on at that time. The first one that we visited, had a few incredibly good shots, however, they were overpowered by the overall amount of images on display. They tried to show dozens of photos in three tiny rooms, I imagine their idea was to create a warm, friendly environment, but to me it just looked as if it was not planned well enough. The photo of the running dog you can see below is one that stood out for me, the monochromatic tones were really quite different that the rest of the photos in that room. One more thing that I liked in that exhibition was the couples of images in the wall corners on the second floor. Unfortunately, you couldn't really appreciate them, because of how small the prints actually were, as well as the fact that they were surrounded by dozens of other photos in close proximity to them.
After that we visited three more galleries and two more university venues. In the first gallery there were these images which you had to look at on both sides, the back and the front, and they would tell a story that way. If I recall correctly there were about 8 pairs of photos, but only had a clear meaning for me. Sometimes when I see somebody's work, I can appreciate it for the amount of effort and technicality that the person has brought to their project, but certain things would seem pointless and not thought-through this is what I felt about this project. After that we went to the university galleries. Most of the first exhibition was focused on black and white or sepia photos. There were a few candid close ups of workers on construction sites that I liked. This time there was plenty of space in between photos and rooms themselves were quite long and narrow, so they could fit lots of people and still not feel cluttered.
At the end of the day, I got a better understanding of what I would like for our own exhibition. I made a note of all the things I liked and especially the ones that I didn't, so know I plan on looking at a few more exhibitions online as well as visiting anything that I can in London, to 'steal' craft.
