大学3年生の冬休みに、2週間ほど北京にあそびに行きました。刺すような寒さで、訪れた公園の大きな池の水がびっしりと凍っていたりしてびっくりしました。滞在の後半は外出するのも飽き、一緒に行った友達には風邪をひいたと言って、部屋にこもってこれを描いていました。
When I was a college student, I made a trip to Beijing for about 2 weeks. It was freezing cold and I'm surprised to see a big frozen lake. In the second week of the trip, I was totally bored to go out so I told my friend that I had a cold, and painted this in the hotel.
ラフを描きます。風景画では、近くの物を濃く、遠くの物を薄く描くことで奥行きを表現する「空気遠近法」というテクニックが存在します。今回はそのコントラストを大げさにして、あたりに広がる、冷たい、霧のような空気の存在を強調する狙いです。

新しくレイヤーを作って上から色を塗ってみますが、あまりうまくいかなさそうな気がしたので、途中で止めます。
Creating a new layer, I kept painting on it. But I stopped because it seemed to go wrong,
代わりに、木の幹や服などに薄く色を入れてみます。手前の木もいらない気がしたので、取り除きます。

女性も取り除きました。なぜ取り除いたのかはちょっと覚えていないです。この絵を描いてから2年近く経っているので…

向きを変えました。これは確か、人物の目の前に木があるのが窮屈に感じたからです。
I turned him around. Maybe because it looked awkward there was the tree in front of her.
試しに湖面全体に青色を重ねてみました。これもなんだか微妙な感じがして、やめます。
I overlaid blue on the surface of the lake, but it looked not so good, so I erased it again.
思い切って全体をモノクロにしました。
I took the courage to turn the whole canvas to grayscale.
女の子のコートにのみ色を付けることにしました。ここまでなかなか納得のいく色の使い方ができていませんでしたが、この時に初めてうまくいったという気がしました。答えはいつだってシンプルイズベストだ。続いて凍った水面を描きこみ、さらに手前の足場も取り除きます。
I tried coloring only on girl's coat. Had every experiment resulted in failure so far, this coloring finally seemed to have succeeded.The answer was so simple.
Next, I painted the detail of the frozen lake,and erased the foreground stones.
枝がかっこ悪く広がっていたので、すっきりさせます。
Because the shape of branches looked messy, I nicely reshaped them.
仕上げにPhotoshopの機能を使ってコントラストを上げ、全体にシャープをかけます。
Now it's almost done. With the function of photoshop, I increased the contrast and sharpen the edges.
完成です。僕の作品で唯一の、Made in Chinaです。
