Almost certainly Shakespeare’s last play, The Tempest can lay claim to being the first ever work of magic realism. Trevor Nunn directed Ralph Fiennes in this 2011 version at the Haymarket.

 

As well as the traditional opening 'storm scene', the video design was concerned with locating the various scenes within the framework of the 'collapsed theatre' stage set. The content itself was vague - only silhouettes of distant horizons, land shapes and skies were used, in differing combinations and colours for each different location.

 

This was projected from oblique angles onto a series of spaced gauzes at the back of the stage, creating multiple, shifting images at different depths. This made it hard to focus on any specific of the backdrop, and gave the illusion of depth to the stage.
