Hand Embroidery - Butterflies

Butterflies

I created these hand embroidered butterflies for a project for Plymouth Museum.  I stitched them to be as close to real British butterflies as possible, to represent the many butterfly specimens held in the museum's collection.
I stitched the butterflies separately and then appliqued them to the garment while it was being constructed.
Peacock Butterfly - this took about 10 hours of hand stitching.
Red Admiral
Adonis Blue
Orange Tip
Purple Emperor - despite the name, they really are blue.
I machine stitched around the majority of the butterflies to secure them to the garment, but for a few I hand stitched a sating backing and then secured them down the centre of the butterfly to the garment.  The idea was to allow some of the butterflies to be 3D, and look as if they were about to fly away.
