4. Alternating Figure/Ground

4. Alternating Figure/Ground
Create a set of three black and white compositions for potential designs which demonstrates the visual effect of alternating figure/ground. Derive designs from the drawing studies and analysis of shapes directly from a selected object.
The objective is to achieve a unit form from your selected object, with positive and negative shapes that visually appears equal, that will alternate as the figure and as the ground.
List out:
• unit form
• chosen pattern (black/white)
• 3 pattern variations (colored) from chosen unit form that must transition smoothly from 1 pattern to the next
• mockup of your chosen pattern (colored)

1. Unit Form:
This is my unit form that I used to create various patterns from. It is a modified version of a corkscrew.
2. Alternating Figure/Ground Design:
Here is one version of a pattern I created from my chosen unit form.
3. Alternating Figure/Ground Designs Composite (Colored):
This is my composite of the 3 patterns I had created from my chosen unit form. I chose a warm orange-yellow color scheme because it suited the season (fall).
4. Mockup Design:
This is a mockup of how my chosen pattern would look on a t-shirt.
