iridesc-o's Cereal Box

PROBLEM

For the first project I was assigned in my digital media class, I was tasked to illustrate and design a cereal box in Illustrator. The technical problem I faced was to create a cereal box that seemed official enough to realistically appear on store shelves. The design problem I faced was to come up with a cohesive concept that was interesting and relevant enough to stand out from potential competitors, and could be executed on a cereal box with a unique character and logo.

SOLUTION

I decided to base my design off of the popular boy band BROCKHAMPTON - specifically their new album Iridescence, which features an iridescent pregnant figure for the cover art. I drew a sketch of a stomach character based off the pregnant figure and then traced over the sketch with Illustrator's pen tool. I also created a logo using gradients, the text tool, and layer style effects which captures the essence of the Iridescence logo. I made sure to also keep the background blue as it is in the album cover, and I designed multicolored cereal inspired by the color scheme of the album. I also made several nods and inside jokes that play to the band itself.

RESULTS

I posted an updated version of the design onto Twitter, and it was retweeted by Kevin Abstract, the leader of the band, as well as Kevin Doan, the band's creative director. With the retweets came a lot of people wanted to buy the design as a shirt. Because of the attention it was getting, I ordered over $600 worth of t-shirts off of CustomInk with the design on it, and I sold them to close friends as well as other fans at the band's Austin show a week later. The shirts ended up producing a reasonable profit as well as bringing together a group of friends at the Austin show, and we branded ourselves as Cerealhampton. We all went to the show with the shirts on as a group, and then after the show I ended up giving a shirt to both Kevin Abstract and Kevin Doan. After this, Kevin Abstract tweeted a picture of the shirt thanking me for it. The demand for the shirts skyrocketed right after, which prompted me to open up my own online shop where the shirts can be sold to anyone.
