The Herb Garden Film Project

The project was to film an instructional video from design to release. Our topic was how to begin an herb garden on your window sill. This was a personal project for a course at Full Sail University.

Introductory Shot of Growing Herbs
The parameters for the video included:
1. Length must be 3 minutes or less
2. Include a combination of video, still shots, narration, and background music

We began the production by building a storyboard that included camera angels and shots, still shots, building the story to engage our viewers, timing of the narration, and a full description of the outcome.
Challenges for this project came in multiple forms. There was an overabundance of still shots and an A film roll and B film roll. This made changing options and adjusting the story fairly easy. It might also increase filming costs and the overall budget. A better control over and understanding of the final vision would have mitigated some of this.
Lessons Learned
The biggest lesson learned was to "make the plan, work the plan." When the plan was deviated from, there was a loss of time. There would have been a budgetary loss - had there been a budget! Seriously though, understanding the vision for the outcome, the objectives of the message, and the story will make filming go more smoothly.  Inspiration can strike and throw things off schedule - but when it does, you are better prepared to support it!
