My entire experience at MICA has been about achieving flow by constantly challenging myself through free experimentation with technology, materials, and processes. For my thesis, I am using hooping, a flow art, as a metaphorical vehicle for visual explorations of flow. The possibilities are endless with this sacred circle – this portal – this round piece of plastic. I am studying Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow theory, the spiritual effects of hoop dancing, and design as performance to guide my explorations of applying hooping to design, and design to hooping. I hope to shape experience and cultivate spontaneity in graphic design to open the door for benefits of unplanned happenings through this continuous cycle of expansion and challenge.
