Mighty Mount Bromo

Mighty Mount Bromo Sunrise
Mount Bromo and Batok a few minutes before sunrise.
Mount Bromo, is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif, in East Java, Indonesia. At 2,329 meters, it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well known. The area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia. The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a plain called the "Sea of Sand", a protected nature reserve since 1919.

I visited Mount Bromo in 2018 as a part of my indefinite trip around the world. The epic sunrise over the volcano is why travelers from all over the world visit the volcano and the little town of Cemoro Lawang. I had to get up at 3am to start hiking from the town to one of the viewpoint on Penanjakan Hill.
The sun hits the volcanoes.
Mount Bromo and the other volcanic mountains actually sit in a caldera of a giant ancient volcano. The town sits on the rim of that caldera from where you can descend into the caldera and walk to Mount Bromo and its brothers over the 'Sea of Sand'. One of the most epic experiences ever.
