Nubis Motum - A Cloud Machine

Nubis Motem or "Cloud Movement", is a mechanical study on the movement of the white giants that tumble above. In this project, I sought to create a machine that would mimic the movement of clouds in order to better understand their individual motions. This machine uses the fluid motion of a rhombic drive as the main mechanism to power the linear squashing of the cloud. The drive powers a shaft supporting two wheels that slowly move back and forth lifting two, off-centered stilts that gracefully push pieces of fluff up and down simulating the roll and bounce of a cloud.

This series of mechanisms was made with machined aluminum and birch plywood.
In order to better understand the machine, I created a working Solidworks model to test my design before constructing it.
The final result.
