Grade 11 Culminating Project
PERSONAL MYTH
For my grade 11 art class, our culminating project had to do with the idea of "personal myths." This meant we had to create a finished piece that was related to, but did not specifically reference, something we were greatly impacted by, whether it be a book, a person, a movie, etc.

I chose to base mine off of a podcast that I have listened to about 5 times in a row now (currently on my 6th round), called The Adventure Zone. I chose it because it and all of the people that created it have made a big impact on my life and my happiness. I also based it around tarot cards, but that's just because I think astronomy is cool.

First, I started by gathering some things for inspiration. I won't show pictures, mainly because I don't own the photos or the art, but I found inspiration in old Greek sculptures (namely Hermes and Thesmorphoria), tarot cards, and an amazing art piece of four stone judges (characters from the podcast) done by @lizparlett on twitter. That art piece really inspired me and I wanted to create something similar to it, but not the exact same.

After I got some references, I created some sketches that I would later use as a base for my final project.
The sketch on the far right was my very first idea, made before I had the thought of making this project centered around tarot cards. It shows the main symbol from the podcast's story, and features seven of the main characters in the show. I realized after I finished it that I wanted to make something more tarot-adjacent, and with less characters and details to draw. That's when I made the middle sketch. It features one of the main characters of the show, Barry, in his skeleton form with a large bell behind him. I decided to scrap this idea as well because I didn't think that the design would work well for the card I had chosen for him, and I had no other ideas for his card. The sketch on the far left was my final sketch and the one I ended up choosing as a base for my final. It pictures four stone judges close together, all focusing sort of on the same spot. I chose these characters for one simple reason: they were perfect for the tarot card Judgement.

After choosing the idea, I had to refine the sketch so I could actually make something out of it.
After refining the sketch to something more workable, I started adding colours on top. The colouring was rather easy, as it was all shades of grey, but it proved some difficulty on some parts due to how detailed they were, namely the hands and hair.
SADLY, I was fool and didn't check the save settings. So about halfway through the project, I saved it and then continued the next day. I ended up finishing it and wanted to see what one of the filters would do, so I selected a portion of the project and tried to apply the filter, forgetting that you can't apply one filter to multiple layers all at the same time. Illustrator crashed and I lost all of my hard work that I had done since the last save. Here's a little comic about how that went over for me.
THE FINISHED PIECE
thank you!
