Wildlife Safety Awareness

The San Manuel Indian Reservation is at the interchange between urban dwellings and undeveloped wilderness. As such, I have developed several training classes, brochures, and communications pieces to address issues of human (and pet)/wildlife interactions.

To keep Tribal residents' pets safe, I developed an annual event designed to train dogs to detect and avoid rattlesnakes. The event features trainers taking the dogs through a course filled with live rattlesnakes, skins, and rattlesnake sounds. The event has seen a continued interest from Tribal residents, and a new interest from San Manuel employees.

We also offer Hiking Safety Courses, complete with hike!
And to minimize concerns among Tribal residents regarding coyote presence, we offered the following information as a social media graphic posted on an internal website, tri-fold brochure, and the following one-page flyer.
To build on an awareness of wildlife early, we developed a San Manuel coloring book that includes the Serrano language version of animals and natural icons of the San Manuel Indian Reservation.
