Yellow-Bellied Lovers (left)
I have always had a complicated relationship with the color of my skin, always too dark to be mistaken as white in America and too dark to be beautiful in China. The Peking opera mask is a symbol of the refined and sparkling vision of ideal Chinese beauty, but to place it on a body not unlike mine is jarring. This relationship between asian female; the visage of submission, and the presence of the white male; the distillation of power creates a dichotomy that I live my life within. I know I crave the whiteness and I know I am ashamed.
