Chapbook
For my chapbook I chose to do a biography on the famous designer and painter Gustav Klimt. He rose to popularity during a movement called the Vienna Secession, which was a stem off of the art nouveau period. Much of this movement involved neutral tones, elongated canvas sizes, and playing around with negative space. In Klimt’s work, these elements are incorporated, as well as his famous use of intricate detail and gold leaf. To start on the cover, I chose simply to use Klimt’s handwriting for the title, like a piece that had been signed. The cover is black Canson paper with gold foiled design. The foil creates a gold, shimmering effect, just like Klimt’s gold leaf in many of his paintings. Also included are simple rectangular elements that mimic the common shapes he used to comprise his works. This makes the cover almost imitate one of his pieces.  For my title fonts I chose Vienne Regular 22, a font commonly used during this time period. And for my body copy I used Wire One, a thin, narrow, sans serif font that both complimented the title fonts and mirrored the elongated design that Klimt often used. All in the book I also incorporate line elements which allude to his Vienne Secession poster as well. To break up the book, many of my pages are broken with full spread images, or di-cuts revealing a full image on the next page. These images are abstracted on the page before them, but then shown in full view on the next.
