Cheltenham Illustration Awards 2018

Cheltenham Illustration awards submissions 2018

The theme for 2018’s Exhibition and Annual: Tangled Tales.

The focus of the Awards has always been one of narrative. Visual storytelling, whether sequential or single image, gives scope to the imagination and opens up possibilities beyond the present moment; what happened before? What happens next?

I submitted two entries along the lines of ‘what really happened in the fairy tales’. Neither of them won anything but I enjoyed doing them, completely in Illustrator.
The fairest one of all
I’ve never trusted Snow White and wandered what her true intentions could really be. Here she is, triumphant, sitting on a throne made from the all powerful ‘magic mirror’. I say she’s triumphant because she’s created a mirror for each of the fairy tale beautys to ask the simple question “who is the fairest one of all?” And the answer from the mirrors? “Snow White”. Crushed by doubt and consumed by vanity who’s to say what would become of them all! New mirrors await a victim. She sits about to eat the apple, plucked heart in hand, Mum tattoo on her arm and wearing Cinderella’s glass slippers. A rope made from Rapunzel’s hair enslaves her dwarves who clean with a big bad wolf’s tail. An apple tree forest carpet and dark scary wood wallpaper complete her room.
A wolf in gran’s clothing
A fairy tale with the worst case of tragic misunderstanding ever. Little Red had gone to town to collect her new axe from “A wolf in gran’s clothing”, a shop which caters for all wolves who wish to dress as grandma does. Unfortunately she had forgotten to pick up grandma’s new night gown and night cap which sat ready on the counter. Later that day Big Bad Wolf Esq. took the clothes around to grandma’s house and was in the process of helping her into it when the woodsman came in, totally misread the situation and the rest of the story had a far from ‘fairy tale ending’.
