49 Days & Memories

Game Engine: Unity
Development period: 2 months
"49 Days & Memories" is the project name of an adventure game developed in Unity2D that takes place in a Vietnamese city in the present day. The player slips into the role of Linh who helps her family to get various offerings for the 49 day ceremony.

From the time of death until the 49th day, the bereaved must make preparations for a grand banquet to officially bid farewell to the deceased. Within the seven weeks Linh meets a variety of city dwellers, who either help her to find the items she is looking for with clues or suggest an exchange. Since Linh moved from Germany to Vietnam with her
parents not too long ago, she still has to get used to the language and can only talk to other people to a limited extent. Communication is therefore a big subject of the game, but also loss and overcoming.

The project was the main content of my thesis and final design project at HTW Berlin.

Synopsis
Linh‘s mother has recently passed away.
Although the girl hasn‘t been able to cope with the loss properly, she already has to help actively with the preparations for the 49 day funeral ceremony: A traditional remembrance
ceremony held to commemorate deceased family members and attended by relatives, numerous friends and acquaintances. Despite Linh‘s language barrier, the young girl with German-Vietnamese roots now has to procure all kinds of offerings and learns a lot of new things about her mother's hometown and her own family history within the next seven weeks.

Ideation
Before the storyboard took shape, a brainstorming session was held to come up with a variety of possible scenes for the game to play in different locations within the town.
On the basis of those scenes the level design for the entire location was decided.
