Penguin Book - Life of Pi: Cover Design

Final designed of the Book Cover - Penguin Books
I went through the process using Photoshop CS6 to create a book cover design. I have picked one of the book titles from the brief called Life of Pi because I have seen this film and the visuals looked beautiful, with one scene of a whale coming out the sea together with the lovely soundtrack. Before I started the process in Photoshop, I sketched the observational drawing ideas and showed Kevin who suggested which one he thought was the better one. Kevin preferred my whale outline drawing so I tried as many different whale outline drawing ideas as possible which I found very difficult. I had to make sure the drawing fitted onto A3 size sheets of paper.
When the image was vectorised, I had to open the book template from Kevin’s email. I had to set up the layouts, change the colour from an orange to a blue background and added the textured water image from the Internet and put it into another new layer in Photoshop. One blue main background layer and one image of water layer were attached with the opacity image to create a sheered, transparent and merged image background.
In addition, I put the vectorised image of a whale onto the book cover template in Photoshop. I selected it then used Wizard Tool to remove the entire white fill. I scaled and resized it then made some adjustments to improve it.
Lastly, I have found the process of my book cover design hard to complete as I have not used Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator before but now it seems my skills are very much improved.  I think I am happy and confident with the final process of my book cover design.
