Goodwill Brand Book
8" x 64", 2018
This eight page accordion book is a brand study on Goodwill thrift store using physical and digital collaging with vector work. Using the medium of collage, the comparison is drawn between the appropriation involved in thrifting and collaging.
It always starts with sketching, pencil to paper. The physicality engages the brain and gets the creativity flowing. These are very quick sketches trying to find and form the feeling of the brand book, each with different criteria, and each more complex then the last.
At first, the idea of collage didn't even cross my mind in thinking about the brand book before the ideation process. With the restraints of each sketching box, something new was discovered, most importantly being the main idea: collage and thrifting as appropriation (and not the negative kind.)
And finally, after countless magazines were raided and my personal photography of a goodwill location in Fells Point cut up, the Goodwill Brand Book was made.
