"My Favorite Things About Appa"—CMYK Zine

Challenge:
Create a Bradbury Thompson inspired single page zine using only pure values of CMKY.

Solution:
I designed an 8 page zine about my dog titled "My Favorite Things About Appa." I chose two typefaces, Baby Teeth and News Gothic, that were used in the 60's to stay in line with the inspiration I took from Thompson's work during the same time. While I was inspired by his work and used purely CMYK as he did, although through a different, digital process, this zine takes on a very different feel from Thompson's designs.

Process:
I had a lot of fun creating this zine for the process was very experimental and playful. I manipulated photos using halftone screens in order to incorporate them while still only using pure CMYK values. I played around with overlaying photos on top of one another and slightly shifting them, as well as using varying frequencies of dots in different colors.

When designing the pages, I worked on them as spreads and incorporated certain elements, such as hand drawn doodles and large capital A's in Baby Teeth, throughout for cohesiveness. I also used repetition and created new colors through transparency-multiply that is reminiscent of Bradbury's style.

The final product is very bright, bold and expressive. It is, of course, adorable as it features so many photos of my lovely dog Appa and conveys the overflowing love that I have for him.
