Exploring Iguazu Falls on the Argentina-Brazilian

Dr. Loretta Itri is a respected presence in the New Jersey drug development sphere, who has held leadership responsibilities with The Medicines Company. With a passion for travel, Loretta Itri, MD, is planning a trip to Buenos Aires, famous for its nearby scenic locations such as the Iguazu Falls.

Comprising approximately 275 waterfalls, Iguazu Falls spans nearly 2.7 kilometers wide and represents one of the most powerful concentrations of water flow in the world. From November through March, the falls can generate 13,000 cubic meters of water each second, which is sufficient to fill five Olympic swimming pools.

Situated on the border between Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu Falls inhabit an abundant subtropical rainforest and have held UNESCO World Heritage Site status for the past 35 years. Wildlife encounters are not uncommon, with different animals such as monkeys, toucans, and jaguar prowling around the area.

Popular ways to explore Iguazu Falls include a series of boardwalks leading to the Garganta del Diablo or Devil’s Throat, a large stream of water curtain comprising more than a dozen individual waterfalls. Alternatively, speed boats can take visitors directly under the falls to experience the splash of water first-hand. Visitors on the Brazilian side of the border do not get caught in the falls as much, but have the best views of the immense scope and size of the waterfall system.
