During my exchange in Finnish Lapland, I, together with 3 other international students, created a textile design for a curtain based on Finland and Finnish design.
Elements of Finnish Design
A problem the Finns living in the arctic deal with, is the polar night during winter and the midnight sun during summer.
The concept consists of two curtains. The front curtain is made out of a thin fabric with a light natural colour and has a typographic pattern printed on it. The back curtain is made out of a thicker dark opaque fabric with small holes that match the highest points of the typographic pattern. In winter, when the sun is only present for 3 hours per day, only the thin curtain can be used to get as much light in but also get some privacy. During summer, when the sun doesn't go down, both curtains can be used. The tiny holes will let small beams of light through to create a starry night sky.
