Cuba Through My Eyes

Cuban shades of Blue.  I shot this in Trinidad, Cuba in February.

Dream State. Havana, Cuba.  The reflections were rich with detail.
Pre-Dawn photo shoot our last day in Havana before returning home to the United States.
In Cuba only the police and the military have guns.  This is a shooting gallery for the Children of the Revolution.
This is inside the building where the movie, "Strawberry and Chocolate" was filmed.  We ate at a Palladar (restaurant) on the top floor.
Produced by Robert Redford, the state-financed Cuban film Strawberry and Chocolate, is a look into the unique relationship between David (Vladimir Cruz), a young heterosexual Communist, and Diego (Jorge Perugorria), an older, homosexual intellectual. Set in 1979 in Havana, it explores the politics and changing social views surrounding homosexuality.
This is butcher in a small outdoor marketplace in Havana.
This little boy wanted me to take his picture.  This is on a Tobacco Farm, in the drying barn and his mother, who is tying tobacco leaves on poles to dry, is in the background.
The sign posted in front of the shooting gallery.
While walking the streets of Havana Centro we came across this shooting gallery.  As his mother looks on, this cuban child, dressed in his school uniform and his ninja turtle backpack, he takes aim at a bunch of tin cans tied to a few metal beams.  On the wall you can also see posters of Fidel Castro and Che Guevera.
This is a tobacco farmer  at a farm in the hills of Vinales, Cuba.
When in Trinidad I got a shave witha  straight edge razor from a Cuban barber.  This was the first time I had been shaved by anyone in my life and the first with a staright edged razor and the first by a Cuban barber.  After my shave I stood in the front door of his shop and this is the scene I saw across the street.

I was invited into this man's home in Trinidad, Cuba.  He was very gracious.  I love the lighting and the sparseness of his home.  Cubans are a very proud people.

I love the contrasts of the image.  I came across the old RCA Victor Building on Neptuno Street in Havana.  I propped myself across the street and took quick images as the cars sped by.  I will be doing a three piece photo with three different cars, this one, a blue one and a white one, printed onto a sheet of metal and then framed all together.

I call this photo, "The Future".  I originally took this in May 2012.  In February 2013 I returned to this town (Vinales, Cuba) with  8x12 prints of these babies and found the family.  The mother, the relatives and these same children were playing in the back yard.  I walked in, explaining to the mother who I was and handing her a bunch of photos.  She looked at them and screeched with excitement.  It was amazing and brought me to tears.
