Metro is committed to providing a world-class transportation system that enhances the quality of life for all who live, work, and play within Los Angeles County. Metro serves a population of just over ten million people in one of the most ethnically-diverse counties in the United States, with approximately 225 spoken languages including English.

To ensure that the level and quality of transportation services are enjoyed by all Angelenos, including persons with limited English proficiency, Metro’s in-house designers have developed a library of universal pictograms used across a diverse set of media including signage, print, and web.

The goal for our pictograms is to be impactful and deliver the message quickly and clearly to our customers. In addition, the visual language and style is expressly designed to voice and strengthen Metro’s brand in the public eye.

Metro’s in-house design team works closely with internal stakeholders including Metro’s ADA & Civil Rights department to ensure our messages are being broadcast equitably to the public at-large, in full and fair participation.

The pictogram library is just one example of how Metro is beginning their preparations to host the 2028 Summer Olympic Games and the hundreds of thousands of international visitors the city will welcome as part of the celebration.

Each pictogram is developed on a baseline grid and carefully designed to work together and alongside each other in any configuration.
