Drawing from the Unconscious

INTROSPECTIVE I
Drawing from the Unconscious
This project began as an experiment in the way the inner psyche can effect and produce a work of art. With no preconceived notions and using methods of abstraction and gesture, a layer of conté was used to produce a base. In a continuous conversation with the developing work, images were pulled from the shapes and shadows that began to naturally form. The theories surrounding Gestalt psychology were used as influence in the piece as the goal was for the mind to pull out imagery that held an unknown significance to me.

Completed in November of 2018, this piece was very much a meditation in exploring the unconscious mind and the dreamlike states one can achieve through the artistic process.

As the work developed I realized the texture of the paper combined with the conté as well as the gestural style became an important part of the piece's identity.
