Branding & Identity, Exhibition & Wayfinding Design

Defining the overall graphic identity for adaptation into museum wayfinding systems, graphic collaterals and exhibition graphic families, involved a thorough research into the rich Javanese culture of Solo, a province in central Java that was a former Royal city and home to two Royal enclaves.

Batik is intrinsically intertwined with Javanese culture. In fact, Solo is generally looked upon as the cradle of Indonesia’s intangible cultural heritage, and also lays claim to some of the best batik workmanship, particularly Batik Keraton (or Royal Batik). Descended from the royal households and bearing distinct hues and patterns, there is always a philosophical or symbolic meaning attached to each motif.

Based on various batik references unique to Solo and authentically Indonesian, subtle patterns are developed into the logo, to keep it culturally relevant and unique to Museum Bank Indonesia, Solo and true to the "Spirit of Java".

The use of repetition is an important element throughout the branding and identity, creating the illusion of movement and transience.
Layering Systems and Ways of Seeing
In the signage and exhibition graphics, a layering system is introduced to encourage discovery and ways of “seeing”, through the play of positive and negative elements. Creating a concept for the exhibition graphics that is flexible and easily adaptable was paramount. Despite each gallery having its own unique "look and feel", generic families and hierarchies would be kept consistent.
