CURE Hydrocephalus and Endoscopic Surgical Treatment

CURE Hydrocephalus and Endoscopic Surgical Treatment
A managing member of Selkirk Partners, Stewart Strawbridge is a strong supporter of the CURE Hydrocephalus program, witnessing firsthand the life-saving work of the neurosurgeons involved in this network. Stewart Strawbridge’s son, diagnosed with hydrocephalus, benefited from the care, research, and skills provided by CURE Hydrocephalus’s neurosurgeons, including Dr. Benjamin Warf, the nonprofit’s senior medical director.

CURE Hydrocephalus serves as a training program and network for neurosurgeons worldwide, with an emphasis on treating hydrocephalus in developing countries. Hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by an accumulation of fluid (cerebral spinal fluid) in the cavities or ventricles of the brain, is often referred to “water on the brain” and normally requires surgery as part of treatment.

Traditional treatment of hydrocephalus includes the insertion of shunts to allow the drainage of fluid from the brain. Dr. Benjamin Warf, in recent years, introduced a new method of treatment, involving endoscopic methods, circumventing the need for placing and maintaining a shunt. In the developing world, endoscopic methods are often preferred over placing a shunt due to the lower cost and decreased need for surgical maintenance.
