The Multilocalism Map

In The Multilocalism Map, I display my own multilocalism through a set of cartogram maps drawn to navigate the emotional climate in each place.
This project is a part of a series of visual explorations I conducted for my thesis project at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). You can find my thesis project here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/81911731/The-Multilocalist

Project Mentors: Annet Couwenberg, Ryan Hoover, Alan Grover

Emotional climate is how one feels in a place. It can be associated with different aspects of home like experiences, relationships, culture, identity, sounds, etc. Here is a cartogram of my multilocalities. It uses emoticons to explore the concept of emotional climate.
I used Arduino and processing to construct a step sensor. Stepping on the floor mat triggers different soundscapes and highlights the corresponding area on the map.
The floor mat acts as a step sensor. It is constructed using a velostat sheet, uncoated wire mesh, card stock paper, wire and duct tape. The uncoated wire mesh acts as a conductor. When stepped on, the circuit gets completed, passing current thought the wire and switching on the soundscapes using an Arduino.
Listen to the soundscapes here. Best when heard on headphones.
