Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art

The inter-season programme of RIBOCA, microRIBOCA was developed to foster a feeling of belonging to a particular place among Rigans and to free their creative potential that is present in everyday life in the public space of the city. It will offer interdisciplinary public art projects, urban exploration tours, and educational master classes, providing Rigans with tools for social involvement useful for urban revitalization.

The idea of the microRIBOCA visual identity is based on the union of: 1. a map grid, 2. the grid of the city streets, 3. lines being at the core of every communication and progress.

The most memorable part of the RIBOCA1 visual identity was not the logo with the letters positioned in one line, but the part where they are scattered across the layout. We saved this part of the visual identity and connected it with new elements. The letters RIBOCA give way to new elements.

A relief from Khosabad with Assyrian officer, Piet Modrians artworks and his proportions for the picture ‘Broadway Boogie-Woogie’, works of other artists, Orthodox icons, architecture, ancient and modern town plans, etc. All of these are based on grids. Grids connect RIBOCA and the city, creating a recognizable structure for placing and positioning the information.

Grid lines form flexible letters. These letters are adaptable to any layout. In such a way, visual identity becomes dynamic, not static and is always different. With these letters, microRIBOCA designs and its idea are easily adaptable to any layout and any type of content: books, postcards, posters, banners, billboards, animated videos etc. Additionally, the visual identity uses not only abstract line letters, but also imagery. This is done in order to attract a wider audience, an audience that is not too used to contemporary art.

The microRIBOCA logo is recognisable, consistent and reflects the idea of dialogue, neighbourhood, communication, interaction and a sense of belonging.

The new colours are close to the RIBOCA1 colour palette in order to create a visual connection and make it clear that it is still RIBOCA, even though RIBOCA and microRIBOCA are different events, and make sure people understand this. The colours are warmer, to make the designs of microRIBOCA less official in appearance.

The Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art (RIBOCA) is an international biennial with a European focus and a strong regional profile, founded in 2016. Taking the rich history of Riga and the Baltic states as its underlying framework, the Biennial highlights the artistic landscape of the wider region and creates opportunities for artists to enter into dialogue with the cultural, historical and socio-political context of the city and its geographic surrounds
